Cataracts affect almost everyone, sooner or later. The natural lens of your eye is made mostly of water and protein. Sometime in your 60s, 70s or 80s, some of the protein will clump together, causing your natural lens to become brown and clouded. When this occurs, light rays passing through the eye become scattered and unfocused. The result is that all objects, whether near or far, become blurry. This "browning" of the natural lens inside your eye is called a cataract. If left untreated, it can actually lead to blindness, although in the modern world this is uncommon.

| Cataracts result in the natural crystalline lens of the eye becoming clouded. Light can no longer pass clearly through the lens to the retina. Vision is blurry and usually becomes worse over time. Cataracts are usually caused by aging, but can be caused by heredity, disease or injury. |
